Accra’s floods are usually discussed as a transport, drainage, and public-safety problem. They are also an energy-resilience problem. Water can enter substations, transformer areas, switch rooms, generator compounds, and low-level electrical spaces. Even when equipment remains undamaged, operators may isolate supply because energizing flooded assets can endanger staff, customers, and the public.
That risk became visible in June 2026, when GRIDCo and ECG announced precautionary shutdowns affecting the Mallam and Achimota primary substations after flooding reached critical power infrastructure. The decision protected people and equipment, but it also demonstrated how one weather event can interrupt electricity across homes, offices, hospitals, shops, and industrial operations.
Inside a facility, the effects multiply. Grid loss starts generators, increases fuel consumption, and may expose neglected batteries, transfer switches, pumps, controls, or maintenance gaps. Roads blocked by water can delay fuel delivery and technical support. Restarting wet or contaminated equipment without inspection can create further damage, shock, arc-flash, or fire risk.
Useful preparation begins before the rain. Facility teams should identify electrical assets below likely flood level, inspect drainage around plant areas, confirm safe isolation procedures, and test generators, automatic transfer switches, UPS systems, alarms, and sump pumps. Critical loads should be documented so limited backup power supports life safety, communications, refrigeration, security, and essential operations first.
During a flood, staff should never enter standing water near electrical equipment or attempt an improvised restart. Afterward, qualified personnel should inspect affected systems, document damage, verify protective devices, and record generator hours and fuel use. Those records reveal the true cost of the disruption and help prioritize resilience investments.
For owners, the lesson is straightforward: flood resilience is not separate from energy management. It belongs in condition assessments, emergency plans, maintenance routines, capital budgets, and every serious conversation about operational continuity in Accra.
